Singapore 1999 |
In 1999 we visited Singapore en-route to Europe. We started out on 1st April, and based ourselves in a lovely modern hotel near Orchard Road. |
 |
 |
We explored the modern shopping district around Orchard Road, near to our hotel.
Here we found pavement cafes in the French style, selling pattiseries and
coffee. There were big fans beside the tables, to keep patrons a little cooler. |
We visited the historic Raffles Hotel, a masterpiece of British Colonial
architecture, and a well-preserved relic of Singapore's past. |

We were honoured to meet in person, Ameer
Ali and his family, whom we previously met via this web site.
Ameer generously invited us to attend the 1999 Bursary Award
Presentation Ceremony at the Singapore Buddhist Lodge. We were privileged to see
Mr. Chan Soo Sen, Parliamentary Secretary of
the Prime Minister's Office, present certificates to students
from various primary, secondary and higher schools. We were most
favourably impressed by the religious tolerance exhibited by the Buddhists in generously extending their scholarships to students
from all walks of life and all faiths. |
